Elaine's 60-mile walk, Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, 3-Day Santa Barbara to Malibu
"These shoes are made for walkin',
and that's just what they'll do. They'll walk from Santa Barbara all the way to Malibu!" YES - THESE FEET ARE GOING TO DO THE WALKING! Ever known someone who has had breast cancer? Your mother? Your sister? Your cousin? Your friend? YOU? Did you know that men also get breast cancer? This year, 1,500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die from it. Over two million breast cancer survivors are alive in America today. One million women in America are living with undetected breast cancer. In America this year, a new case of breast cancer will be diagnosed every three minutes. Every 13 minutes, the disease will claim another life. A screening mammogram is a simple, low-dose x-ray procedure that can reveal breast cancer at its earliest stage - up to two years before it is large enough to be felt. According to the American Cancer Society, over 182,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Over 40,000 will die from it. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade fulfills the commitment to breast cancer through a carefully developed program of grants, technical assistance, workshops and training for community-based organizations that are effective in delivering breast health programs to low-income, uninsured and highly diverse populations nationwide. The Crusade is also committed to supporting the work of the breast cancer advocacy community and new approaches to funding medical research. Every research center funded by the Crusade must provide its state-of-the-art services to underserved women. In this way, those who have historically been left behind will be included as science moves forward quickly with new methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. I have decided to help the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade by walking 60 miles from Santa Barbara to Malibu. This is a 3-day walk which will take place October 18-20, 2002. I will be walking with 3,000 other people. We will be using PORT-A-POTTIES, SHOWERING IN TRUCKS AND SLEEPING IN TENTS FOR THREE DAYS. I hope that you will share this adventure with me by supporting me in my fundraising efforts. How can you help? Well, I have committed to raise at least $1,900. PLEASE help by making a donation.
